The instructions provided are little more than a glorified leaflet, and there are no tutorials installed along with the game. It seems to have been written to provide "immersion" and "realism".
I didn't like having to micromanage the crew, but it was not a show stopper. I skipped SH4, but I did play and enjoyed SH3. Steer clear of this monster - it is a disaster. I echo what many others have said in reviews already posted. I had mine up and running within two days. It can be quite confusing knowing which mods to install, because at the moment they are not all integrated into an easy-to-install "mega-mod" but you'll get plenty of help from the forum and everything can be downloaded from there for free.

If you buy this game, which I now recommend, then make sure you join the forum at SUBSIM and download the mods for it. One can only wonder at the potential the future now holds for this game. And the modifications continue to be developed as I write. Of the series, SH5, patched to 1.2 and modded with the best mods, is a worthy successor to the previous games in the series. The enhancements provided for SH5 are unbelievably good, significantly improving this game and making it a more serious simulation.

If the original release had been half as good as version 1.2 is, I'm sure we would not have seen all these complaints! But what has transformed this game more than anything is the work by the "modders" - enthusiasts who modify and add to the original code of the program to produce enhancements. I'm pleased to say that the current 1.2 version of the game has now had the invasive DRM removed, and many of the bugs fixed. Silent Hunter 5 had a lot of instruments, controls and functions stripped from it, giving it a dumbed-down gamey feel, perhaps in an attempt to pander to a broader, more causal market. Game design had also suffered in that it was not really a simulation in the spirit of earlier versions in the series, namely Silent Hunter 3, and Silent Hunter 4. It was clearly unfinished and broken, with many bugs and many things not fully implemented. Many players felt it infringed on their rights.Īnother problem with the original release was with the game itself. Many felt it was an unfair way to treat legimate users of the game, because players suffered disrupted gameplay and the felt controlled and dependent on Ubisoft's servers. As you can see from the other reviews here, it was criticised by many for many reasons. The DRM (Digital Rights Management) on the original release required you to have a constant, online connection to the Internet, just to play in single player. This review has been revised in December 2011, due to improvments made to the game through patches and mods over the last year or so, and also due the removal of the DRM system that everybody has been complaining about.
